Geoffrey Canada
Geoffrey Canada is the President & CEO of Harlem Children’s Zone (HZC) in New York City. The work of Mr. Canada and HCZ has been the subject of many profiles in the media, including “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Good Morning America,” “60 Minutes,” “The Today Show,” National Public Radio’s “On Point,” as well as articles in The New York Times, Newsday, The Boston Globe and USA Today. He has won numerous awards and was named one of “America’s Best Leaders” by U.S. News and World Report. Mr. Canada has a radical new idea: if you want to change the lives of inner city kids, change everything all at once —their schools, their families and neighborhoods. His agency’s Zone Project offers an interlocking network of social service, education and community building programs to thousands of children and families living in Central Harlem. The New York Times Magazine called the project “one of the most ambitious social experiments of our time.” This program is now being replicated in communities throughout the country.
Mr. Canada, who grew up in the South Bronx, has dedicated his life to helping children who are being raised in conditions similar to those faced by his family. Prominent among his many efforts are the Harlem Children’s Zone’s Beacon School, Harlem Peacemakers Program, and Community Pride Initiative. Geoffrey Canada is the acclaimed author of Fist Stick Knife Gun: A Personal History of Violence in America.
Mr. Canada is also the founder and Chief Instructer of the Chang Moo Kwan Martial Arts School. At the school, he teaches the principles of Tae Kwon Do to community youth, along with anti-violence and conflict resolution techniques. The School is a nationally recognized model for violence prevention efforts.
Mr. Canada holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bowdoin College and a Master’s Degree in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Geoffrey Canada is married and the father of four children.
