As the dictionary notes, trauma takes an immediate toll on those experiencing it, but it also can have long-term psychological effects that can stunt a child’s emotional growth and tear families apart. That’s why The Morris A. Wessel Child and Family Trauma center (Wessel Center) is so important to families who have experienced traumatic events. They need help and healing to cope with the shock, as well as hope that the future will be brighter.

How We Help

The Wessel Center diagnoses and treats children and families who have been exposed to traumatic events or situations, and provides services to help prevent their reoccurrence.. Experienced therapists tailor treatment plans to clients’ unique needs. Treatment can include:

  • Individual and family therapy
  • Group therapy and crisis services
  • Case management services
  • Evidence-based practices (such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy) that follow a bottom-up approach integrating the best external clinical practice evidence with individual clinical expertise and consideration of patient preferences

Clinicians also use such methods as:

  • Creative arts therapies
  • Theatre arts
  • Yoga and stress management
  • Positive development programs such as Girl Scouts and arts education
